Peter Kušter (Slovenly Peter in the English translation) is the most popular German children’s book of all time (Original title: Der Struwwelpeter oder lustige Geschichten und drollige Bilder). It was written by the physician and psychiatrist Heinrich Hoffmann from Frankfurt am Main, who wrote and illustrated the picture book as a Christmas gift for his son Carl in 1844. Through the stories he told in an early comic strip form, he tried to warn children about everyday dangers in a fun and entertaining way. Exaggerated, kind of thrilling but at the same time funny – this classical children’s book has been a companion to countless generations of children. No other picture book has been as influential as Der Struwwelpeter, which has been parodied, imitated and reinterpreted in numerous ways. The names of the book’s characters – Zappel-Phillip, Suppen-Kaspar, Hanns Guck-in-die-Luft, etc. – have become part of everyday spoken German. Der Struwwelpeter has even his own museum in Frankfurt am Main.
